Typical polygon miter joints require meticulous angle adjustments and spline reinforcement. But bird's mouth joinery is different. Just machine one edge of each stave and fit the square edge of one stave into the "bird's mouth" of the next. The square shoulder of the bird's mouth locks in the mating board at exactly the right angle for the number of sides you've chosen. On the 12- and 16-sided assemblies, you can leave the shoulders as a feature or smooth them out with a sander, hand plane or lathe. 

But, equal-side cylinders are just the beginning. By making sections of different dimensions, you're no longer limited to just cylinders. You can make race-track ovals, elongated diamonds, squares with beveled corners and an unlimited number of other polygons.
