Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) is prized worldwide for its unmistakable violet-purple coloration and remarkable strength. Native to the tropical regions of Central and South America, Purpleheart stands apart as one of the most visually striking exotic hardwoods available. Freshly milled stock often appears muted brown before exposure to light transforms the heartwood into its signature deep purple hue, creating a dramatic and highly sought-after appearance.

Visual Character & Texture:

Purpleheart typically features a straight to slightly wavy grain with a fine, uniform texture and natural luster. The heartwood ranges from rich violet-purple to deep eggplant tones, often accented by darker streaking that intensifies with age. When properly finished, the wood develops a smooth, glass-like surface that highlights its vivid coloration and refined grain structure.

Working Properties:

Purpleheart is an exceptionally dense and durable hardwood with outstanding resistance to wear and impact. Its hardness and density can make machining somewhat demanding, with a moderate to high blunting effect on cutting edges. Sharp tooling and slower feed rates are recommended to minimize heat buildup, which can darken the wood during milling. Pre-boring is advised for fasteners, and proper dust collection is recommended when sanding or machining this species.
