The Gold Standard of Density and Deep Ink-Black Luster
For centuries, Gaboon Ebony has been the ultimate choice for craftsmen seeking a wood that is as durable as it is beautiful. This is a true "heavyweight" of the timber world—so dense that it actually sinks in water. While only a tiny fraction of Ebony trees yield the jet-black heartwood without variation, each blank we offer represents a wide range of black with some light streaks that is typical of today’s ebony.
The Artist’s Challenge: Ebony is a wood for the patient craftsman. Due to its extreme density and high mineral content, it has a notable dulling effect on cutters. However, for those who take the time, it rewards with a finish unlike any other. It polishes to a high, metallic-like luster and holds crisp, intricate details that would crumble in softer species.
Rarity and Sustainability: Due to its inclusion in the CITES Appendix II listing, genuine Ebony is increasingly difficult to source. Our inventory is largely comprised of pre-CITES material, ensuring you receive authentic Diospyros crassiflora. Please note that while we strive for jet-black consistency, true Gaboon Ebony may occasionally feature subtle grayish-brown streaks—a testament to its natural origin.

Usage Tips
Pro Tip: Because Ebony is prone to splitting if worked too aggressively, we recommend using freshly sharpened carbide tools and taking light, controlled passes. When gluing, a quick wipe with acetone on the joining surfaces will help remove natural oils for a stronger bond.
Wood is a natural product, and pieces may vary slightly. Due to wood movement, shrinkage, and expansion, please measure each piece carefully. Dimensioned within +/-1/8” of size listed.
