Slots are milled into the phenolic along both edges. This lets you clamp the square to your MFT (or any workbench, for that matter) and then your workpiece to the square. Now your work is perpendicular to the work surface. You can also clamp the square to two joining workpieces, holding them perpendicular to each other. The MFT Layout and Assembly Square comes with two 20mm location dogs. Drop them in any two holes in an MFT table top and your square is correctly aligned with all the holes.
