The blade is parallel to, but well below the sole.  While capable of creating a groove, its primary use has historically been adjustment, rather than creation. It's the right tool to clean up or extend the bottom of dadoes, grooves and rabbets. But most router planes have crude depth of cut adjustment. Getting the depth exactly where you want it can be frustrating. On Woodpeckers new Router Plane, the thumbwheel to adjust depth of cut has a feature that virtually eliminates backlash, getting you to your desired depth of cut quickly and with minimal frustration.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIf you look at old router planes,\u003c\/strong\u003e you'll soon notice that in most cases, one was not enough. The sole always seemed to interfere somewhere, so Stanley and its competitors would make another variant that solved one problem at a time. Woodpeckers addressed the problem from the jump by starting with a large (3-1\/2\" x 8-1\/2\") sole, then building in three different positions for the blade mechanism. At each position, the blade mechanism can be mounted facing in or facing out. And at cutting depth, the blade can be rotated in the mechanism in 4 different directions. You always have a way to keep the sole flat on your work, get your blade into tight corners and cut with the blade working with the grain instead of against it. We then treat it with a black nitride coating that reduces friction and virtually eliminates corrosion. The blade mechanism is machined to very tight tolerance, which you'll notice the first time you float the blade up and down. We milled countersunk holes in the base so you can attach shop-built fences, but if you prefer a ready-made approach, we offer an optional fence that can attach in three different positions (opposite the blade mechanism). Every feature screams quality and precision, right down to the double-wedge lock that secures the blade without ever marring the shaft. Your Router Plane is supplied with both square and spearpoint blades. Unlike most hand tools you buy, the back of both blades has been lapped perfectly flat and polished to a mirror finish. The back needs no work whatsoever. The bevel has been carefully ground to the correct angle and requires only light honing before use. You'll use the square blade most of the time. From the first day of geometry class we all remember that three points constitute a plane, and that’s exactly why we built in two rollers. Combine the two rollers with the bevel of your tool and you’ve defined a flat plane. Precision-machined shoulders in the jaws hold your tool perpendicular to the axles and parallel to the wheel surfaces. This design virtually ensures a square edge on your tool if your sharpening stone is flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHowever, a two-wheel design\u003c\/strong\u003e can be a problem. With two wheels on the outside of the guide, wide tools like plane irons can force the wheels off the edge of the bench stone. We solved that by providing 2 different wheel positions. Mount the wheels inside for plane irons and chisels over 1-1\/8\" wide or move them outside for blades from 1\/8\" to 1-1\/8\". In both positions the wheels deliver stable support.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTo make those wheel changes simple\u003c\/strong\u003e you have wide open access to the wheel mounting screws. While you’re putting it back together, you’ll notice the deep, square cut Acme thread. It spins down fast and grips the tool tight. All steel components are stainless, the aluminum jaws are anodized and the wheels are bronze… Everything is corrosion resistant. You can (and should) dunk it in water without worry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe angle sharpened on your tool\u003c\/strong\u003e is determined by how much tool is projecting from the front of the Sharpening Guide. You’ll find the correct protrusions for standard sharpening angles in the Owner’s Manual. But, if you sharpen a wide variety of tools at lots of different angles, you’ll want the Sharpening Angle Fixture. This handy set-up tool gives you a precise reference for primary bevel angles from 15° to 45° in 5° increments and a 2° micro-bevel offset for every one of those primary bevels. Each angle has a positive pin registration, making repeat sharpening quick and easy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAs you’re getting ready\u003c\/strong\u003e to set up your first tool, you’ll notice that the Sharpening Guide is perfectly symmetrical…there’s no front or back or left or right. Most right-handers will want the clamping knob on the right when clamping the tool in. Lefties will normally want it on the other side. No matter what’s comfortable to you, it works. Just place the Sharpening Guide upside down and against the guide stop on the Angle Fixture. Place your tool in the jaws and against the stop and lock it. That’s it…you’re dialed in for sharpening on your bench stones.
